Art Psychotherapy is an established form of psychotherapy and is delivered by Art Therapists or Art Psychotherapists, (the name in interchangable). Art Therapists are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Art therapy uses art as an important mode of expression that is valued alongside talking with the therapist. It’s aim to reduce distress and to help improve well being and mental health by enabling a person to develop insight into themselves and the world around them as well as, self-compassion, self-worth and a sense of ownership for themselves.

During your art therapy sessions I will support you with the thoughts and issues that you (or your child) brings into the therapy space. A wide range of art and craft materials will be available for use to express and articulate thoughts and feelings. Like with any therapy, the process can be challenging as uncomfortable feelings and painful memories may emerge. This is part of the work of therapy which if done in conjunction with a trusting therapeutic relationship can lead to helpful revelation, helping you to understand better your thoughts, emotions and behaviours. Being a non-verbal method to aid thinking and processing, art making can allow for difficult personal materials to come to the surface in a more manageable way.

Who is Art Psychotherapy for?

Art therapy can help people of every age and stage of life, including those whose life has been affected by difficult life experience, illness and/or disability. Being skilled in art or in a craft is not neccessary to benefit from art therapy, you just need to be open to the possibilities that non-verbal and creative processing can bring.
